Anticipation & stopping

Not anticipating hazards ahead

Usually Grade 2 — more serious

Spotting a person getting into a parked car, a ball rolling out, or a child near the kerb — and slowing early — is 'anticipation'. Reacting late is a fault.

✕ The fault

Person heading out from behind the van…

✓ The right way

Hazard spotted early — off the gas, cover the brake.

How to get it right

  1. 1Scan far ahead, both footpaths too.
  2. 2Ask 'What might happen next?'.
  3. 3Cover the brake and slow down before the hazard.
