Rolling back on a hill start

Usually Grade 2 — more serious

Letting the car roll back on a hill — even a little — is marked under the hill start and handbrake.

UPHILL ➜
✕ The fault

Handbrake off before the biting point…

UPHILL ➜
✓ The right way

Gas set, biting point held, observations done.

How to get it right

  1. 1Set more gas than on the flat.
  2. 2Find the biting point and hold it — feel the car pull against the handbrake.
  3. 3Check mirrors and blind spot.
  4. 4Release the handbrake as you add a little more gas.
