At night your scooter must be fitted with a lamp showing a white light to the front and a lamp showing a red light to the back. Electric scooters must have reflectors or reflective materials on the front, rear, and both sides. The front reflectors should be white and can be combined with the front light. The rear reflectors should be red and can be combined with the rear light. The side reflectors should be either white or yellow.
These are the minimum lighting requirements laid down by law. However, to be even more visible to motorists at night, you should: wear a reflective armband; and wear a reflective belt or reflective vest.
You must obey the rules of the road, particularly those that relate to traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, pelican crossings and zebra crossings.
You must not ride the e-scooter under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Riding under the influence can result in a court appearance and a fine of up to €2,000.
E-scooters which do not meet the above criteria, will remain illegal for use on public roads. If you break the road rules or use an e-scooter dangerously, you can be fined. A list of these fines can be found in Appendix 4.
It is important to note that any reference to e-scooters throughout these rules applies only to electric scooters that meet the legal criteria outlined above and are the only type of e-scooter permitted for use on Irish roads.
